"F4YF II. (Food For Your Family II.) (acrylic transfer, metal shelf, plant, LED) 2005/2015
(Text by Krisztina Hunya / Photo by Ben Soir)

"Survival kit contents check. […] Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff."
(Major T.J. "King" Kong in Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, dir. Stanley Kubrick, 1964)

Revisiting his series of works from 2005, Mark Fridvalszki evokes the absurd and psychedelic paranoia of the Cold War era in form of a shelf for food rations, Oxygen and Nitrogen tanks, chemical toilets or sanitation kits. The origin of the images can be found in the civil defense nourishment offerings of that time that would sustain a family for two weeks after the evaporating bomb goes off and they were forced to move to their fallout shelter. In this post-apocalyptic storing situation, the mass-produced objects become part of a post-digital printing process settling down in a limbo-like state between hominess and indifference.
